About the position

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking an engineer to join the Core Materials Development group, focusing on advanced core material technology for nuclear reactor applications. The role involves collaboration with internal and external partners to advance promising technologies, requiring strong teamwork, research, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with internal and external partners to progress core materials technology.
  • Work with experts in nuclear fuel and structural material performance.
  • Collaborate with national laboratories, universities, and commercial companies on technology investigations.
  • Develop and investigate new materials and manufacturing techniques.
  • Create development plans and propose tests, including irradiation experiments in the Advanced Test Reactor.
  • Oversee subcontracts with external partners.
  • Integrate research and analyze data effectively.
  • Communicate technical information clearly in documents and presentations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or science related field and 4 years of relevant experience; or
  • Master's degree in engineering or science related field and 2 years of relevant experience; or
  • PhD in engineering or science related field; or
  • Currently or previously NPE qualified; or
  • CTE/ACRS and 1 year EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program; or
  • Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and 1 year as SRE.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in performing research and development in nuclear materials.
  • Experience in materials testing and characterization including metallography and electron microscopy.
  • Understanding of material fabrication processes for ceramic and metallic materials.
  • Experience with design of experiments or laboratory background.
  • Ability to communicate technical information both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
