About the position

The Nuclear Mechanical Engineer at SPECTRA TECH INC will play a crucial role in supporting the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This position involves engineering design, analysis, and project management for significant upgrades to the reactor's pressure vessel and beryllium reflector. The engineer will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure project milestones are met while adhering to safety and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare engineering designs for new installations and upgrades of HFIR structures, systems, and components (SSCs).
  • Perform calculations and analyses to support design basis and requirements.
  • Apply relevant codes and standards, such as ASTM, ASME, NQA-1, and AWS.
  • Support the development of reactor core components replacement plans.
  • Prepare design specifications to define and determine acceptance criteria for component upgrades.
  • Prepare material specifications and provide technical support in procurement of materials.
  • Implement modifications in accordance with RRD configuration control processes.
  • Lead fabrication, machining, and assembly of reactor core components and special tooling in accordance with HFIR specifications.
  • Prepare and maintain as-built documentation for assigned HFIR SSCs, including engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Provide project management for installation of mechanical design changes.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in an engineering related discipline.
  • 10 or more years of experience working at an operating nuclear reactor with engineering experience.
  • Comprehensive understanding of nuclear technology, including reactor safety basis, design, and construction.
  • Familiarity with applicable DOE Orders and Standards, such as DOE O 420.1C and DOE STD 1189.
  • Strong understanding of ASME pressure vessel and piping codes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with welding and joining techniques.
  • Knowledge of GD&T principles from ASME Y14.5.
