About the position

The Nuclear Safety Engineer position at Westinghouse Electric involves supporting the company's mission to provide clean energy solutions through engineering calculations and validation experiments focused on nuclear safety. This role is designed for recent graduates or early-career professionals with a background in engineering, specifically in nuclear, mechanical, or chemical disciplines. The position requires a mobile work arrangement, with two days per week on-site at the Burr Ridge, IL facility, and emphasizes the importance of safety and quality in the nuclear industry.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering calculations related to nuclear safety, fluid flow, probability risk assessment, severe accident analysis, equipment qualification, heat and mass transfer, and other duties as assigned by manager.
  • Prepare appropriate documentation supporting evaluations and analyses.
  • Verify routine design evaluations and analyses performed by others, as qualified.
  • Interface on a limited basis with customers, vendors, and other internal functional groups on engineering level to obtain information necessary to perform work assignments.
  • Develop skills necessary to assume more independent assignments and support the business strategic initiatives.
  • Identify and recommend improvements in processes on a continuing basis and assist in implementation as well as identify and assist in the development of new business opportunities.
  • Plan and schedule own work to meet assignment requirements within schedule and budgetary requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Nuclear, Mechanical, Chemical)
  • 0 - 3 years of experience.
  • Proficiency in coding in one or more of the following: MathCAD, C++, Fortran, Visual Basic.
  • Experience in dispersion modeling, severe accident modeling and analysis, thermal-hydraulics modeling and analysis (i.e., RELAP, MAAP, MELCOR), facility hazard modeling and analysis, equipment qualification, and/or laboratory experience with custom experiments.
