About the position

The Nurse 1 (Registered Nurse) position at the Southeastern Correctional Institution involves providing comprehensive nursing care to patients within a correctional facility. The role focuses on administering medications, performing medical assessments, responding to emergencies, and collaborating with healthcare teams to ensure the well-being of inmates. The nurse will also participate in training, quality assurance activities, and health initiatives, contributing to the overall mission of rehabilitation and public safety.

Responsibilities

  • Administers medication (oral, intramuscular, and intravenous) and monitors patient medication compliance
  • Performs treatments and assists with nurse's sick call
  • Assists with doctor's sick call
  • Manages chronic care clinics
  • Responds to emergencies providing emergency care and cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Performs subjective and objective assessment of patients
  • Collects vital signs and documents findings
  • Collects urine and/or other bodily fluid specimens
  • Prepares patients for release or transfer to other facilities
  • Ensures discharge medication orders are completed and forwarded to pharmacy services
  • Participates in work-related training and institution training exercises
  • Provides assistance to other healthcare staff
  • Investigates and documents problem areas or areas of concern
  • Reviews shift report from preceding shifts
  • Assists physicians with medical procedures
  • Counsels patients regarding healthcare maintenance and disease prevention
  • Participates in quality assurance activities
  • Provides training and work direction to new nurses and other healthcare personnel
  • Serves as a resource for healthcare and security staff regarding healthcare matters
  • Participates in group programming and health initiatives
  • Performs administrative duties as indicated
  • Schedules multidisciplinary team meetings
  • Assumes duties of shift charge as assigned
  • Performs inventory and ordering of medical supplies
  • Assists ancillary staff to ensure patient care needs are met

Requirements

  • Current licensure as a registered professional nurse in the state of Ohio
  • Experience in nursing, urgent and emergency care, and basic medical procedures
  • Proficient in medical charting and direct support/direct care
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, decision-making, and teamwork skills
  • Cultural awareness

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in correctional healthcare settings
  • Knowledge of rehabilitation and correctional programs
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment
