About the position

The Nurse Associate Unit Secretary in the Intensive Care Nursery at Cooper University Health Care plays a vital role in supporting the healthcare team and ensuring the well-being of patients in a high-stakes environment. This position is situated within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which is a 35-bed level 3 nursery designed to care for critically ill infants, including those as young as 23 weeks gestation. The unit is organized into smaller pods, allowing for focused care of up to four infants at a time, with a transitional nursery accommodating up to 12 infants preparing for discharge. The NICU is staffed by a dedicated team of Registered Nurses, attending physicians, fellows, Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, and Residents, complemented by a robust ancillary team that includes Respiratory Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, and Speech Therapists. This collaborative environment is essential for addressing the complex needs of each infant, particularly those requiring surgical interventions and advanced respiratory support. As a Nurse Associate Unit Secretary, you will assist with patients' activities of daily living under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Your responsibilities will include supporting essential tasks such as bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, feeding, and mobility assistance. You will also perform technical duties as directed by the RN, including phlebotomy, vital signs monitoring, point of care testing, EKGs, and Foley catheter care, ensuring that all actions are documented appropriately. Communication is key in this role, as you will be responsible for identifying and reporting changes in patients' statuses to the RN, reinforcing education for patients and their families, and participating in patient satisfaction initiatives. Additionally, you will assist with the admission, transfer, and discharge processes of patients, contributing to a seamless experience for families and healthcare providers alike.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the activities of daily living including bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, feeding, toileting/hygiene, and assisting with mobility and transport.
  • Performs technical duties as directed by RN, such as phlebotomy, vital signs, point of care testing, EKGs, and Foley catheter care specific to population served and documents appropriately.
  • Identifies and communicates changes in patient's status to RN and responds appropriately.
  • Reinforces education of patient and family/responsible party regarding individual care needs and safety issues.
  • Participates in Cooper patient satisfaction initiatives and goals, and performance improvement activities.
  • Assists in orientation of new hires.
  • Completes annual unit-specific competencies by specified due date.
  • Attends Staff Meetings when available for documents review of staff meeting minutes.
  • Assists in admission, transfers and discharges of patients to and from the unit.

Requirements

  • 0-2 years of experience preferred.
  • High School / GED required.
  • Successful completion of an unlicensed health care provider/technician program.
  • Completed at least one fundamental nursing course in an accredited RN Program.
  • 1 year or more patient care experience in a similar role.
  • AHA Basic Life Support certification - required.

  • Successful phlebotomy/EKG competency must be completed during orientation.
