About the position
The Nurse (Clinical/Critical Care) position at the Defense Health Agency involves providing comprehensive intensive care nursing to critically ill patients at the San Antonio Military Medical Center. The role requires advanced specialized nursing care for patients with life-threatening health issues, including those undergoing complex procedures and treatments. The nurse will also serve as a mentor and resource for other nursing staff, ensuring high standards of patient care and safety in a critical care environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide advanced specialized nursing care to critically ill patients in the ICU.
- Monitor and assess patients' conditions, interpreting signs of deterioration and taking corrective actions.
- Administer medications and perform life-saving measures as needed, including advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Assist physicians with complex procedures and maintain infection control standards.
- Develop and update nursing care plans based on patient needs and conditions.
- Educate patients and families about disease processes, care procedures, and discharge planning.
- Serve as a resource and mentor for other nursing staff, providing training and guidance.
- Participate in quality assurance and care standard development for the critical care unit.
Requirements
- Current, active, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in at least one US state.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is highly desirable.
- Experience in critical care nursing and knowledge of advanced nursing practices.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with extracorporeal life support and cardiac assistive modalities.
- Familiarity with hemodynamic monitoring devices and critical care transport procedures.
