The Nurse (Clinical/Emergency) position at the Department of Defense is located in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Irwin Army Community Hospital, Fort Riley, Kansas. This role involves providing comprehensive nursing care to patients of all ages, assisting in complex and emergent procedures, and operating specialized medical equipment. The position is a full-time, permanent role with a salary range of $72,553 to $94,317 per year, and it requires a current nursing license and relevant certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care and treatment to a variety of patients, from newborn to geriatric, with conditions ranging from minor to emergent.
  • Assist physicians with complex and emergent procedures including insertion of chest drainage tubes, tracheotomies, emergency thoracotomies, gastric lavage, and suturing lacerations.
  • Operate specialized medical equipment such as resuscitators, defibrillators, electrocardiographs, oxygen apparatus, intravenous pumps, and rapid intravenous infusers.
  • Administer medications via various routes and change dressings, prep wounds, remove sutures, insert catheters, apply splints and dressings, and collect specimens.
  • Arrange transfer of patients to appropriate inpatient care areas and coordinate patient referrals to ancillary healthcare services.
  • Follow quality improvement and internal control activities for the ambulatory setting, including risk appraisals, chart audits, trend identification, and reporting corrective actions.

Requirements

  • A graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited professional nursing educational program.
  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a U.S. state or territory.
  • At least one full year of professional nursing experience providing care to emergency patients, administering medications, and operating specialized medical equipment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross and ability to obtain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Fetal Monitoring within 90 days of employment.
