About the position

The Nurse Extern position at MedStar Medical Group is designed for nursing students to gain practical experience in patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The role involves assisting with various nursing tasks, collaborating with healthcare team members, and contributing to patient care plans while maintaining patient confidentiality and safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Registered Nurse in the care of a group of patients.
• Help formulate and implement health teaching plans.
• Transport patients, specimens, equipment, and supplies as needed.
• Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
• Organize patient care assignments in collaboration with the Registered Nurse.
• Collect and document pertinent patient information, including vital signs and care activities.
• Reinforce patient teaching and complete delegated tasks.
• Confer with the Registered Nurse to identify patient needs and prepare for transfers or discharges.
• Participate in mandatory training sessions and staff meetings.
• Contribute to department goals and adhere to policies and quality standards.
• Demonstrate effective communication with the healthcare team.
• Participate in community outreach efforts and quality improvement teams.
• Perform basic procedures such as wound care, suctioning, and IV catheter insertions.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a Nursing degree program.
• Basic knowledge of nursing practices and procedures.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients and healthcare team members.
• Understanding of patient privacy and confidentiality regulations.

Nice-to-haves

• Previous experience in a healthcare setting.
• Basic life support (BLS) certification.
