About the position
The Nurse Extern position at Wheeling Hospital, Inc. is a temporary role designed for nursing students to gain practical experience in various nursing areas. The extern will work under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) and will be involved in both direct and indirect patient care, assisting in the delivery of nursing services and promoting patient comfort.
Responsibilities
- Assists the registered nurse in providing direct patient care to promote patient comfort and facilitate diagnostic and treatment procedures.
- Helps patients with activities of daily living in a timely manner, following departmental procedures.
- Performs designated procedures as needed, adhering to departmental protocols.
- Observes, records, and reports patient concerns, symptoms, reactions, and progress to the RN in a timely manner.
- Assists the RN with examinations and procedures according to departmental procedures.
- Demonstrates competency in basic and intermediate care skills as verified by clinical mentors and managers.
- Maintains a clean, sanitary, and safe environment to prevent infections and ensure safety for patients and staff.
- Cleans assigned patient care areas and unit equipment according to departmental procedures and schedules.
Requirements
- Must be entering the final semester/year of a Diploma Program, Associate, or Baccalaureate RN program from an accredited School of Nursing.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
