About the position

The Nurse Extern II position serves as a transitional role for nursing students, allowing them to gain clinical experience while providing quality nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses or licensed practical/vocational nurses. The role involves direct patient care, reporting patient status, maintaining equipment, and operating medical devices, all while promoting excellent patient satisfaction and outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Assist with and provide quality nursing care to patients.
• Report patient status updates, conditions, or unusual circumstances to the nurse in charge.
• Maintain equipment and ensure units are pristine.
• Operate medical devices as required.
• Gain clinical experience by learning nursing procedures and various disease processes.
• Familiarize oneself with the hospital environment and interact with physicians and other healthcare providers.
• Complete and assist RN/LPN/LVN with assigned patient care activities.

Requirements

• Must have a valid BLS (CPR) certification or obtain it within 30 days of hire.
• Must be an active student in good standing in a professional Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse program.
• Successful entrance into the final term of the nursing program is required.
• Evidence of completion of didactic/skills lab including fundamentals is necessary if not currently a Nurse Extern I.
• Return of one or two instructor evaluations indicating satisfactory performance of fundamental nursing skills is required.
• Must present proof of continued enrollment and passing grades in nursing classes each semester until graduation.

Nice-to-haves

• One year of experience in an inpatient clinical setting preferred.
