About the position

The Nurse Extern position at SSM Health St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo is a transitional role designed for nursing students currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program. This role allows students to gain practical experience in patient care under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) while preparing for a future RN position upon completion of their studies. The extern will assist in various nursing care services, contributing to patient satisfaction and safety.

Responsibilities

• Completes patient care tasks based on skills deemed competent in nursing school under direction of RN.
• Contributes to overall quality and safe care for patients by answering patients' calls for help, taking their vital signs, and monitoring their behavior and physical condition.
• Creates a positive patient experience by assisting patients with their activities of daily living including bathing, ambulating, feeding, and personal hygiene.
• Assists and performs procedures such as dressing changes, enemas, ostomy care, and catheter care.
• Establishes a compassionate environment and provides emotional and psychological support to patients.
• Relays information via charting and communicates changes in patient condition to team members.
• Prepares patients for discharge and accompanies them upon dismissal as indicated.
• Stocks and maintains supplies and equipment in keeping with patient care needs.
• Orients new patients and significant others to the nursing unit.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Current enrollment in an accredited school of nursing and completion of first clinical rotation.
• Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) certification from the American Heart Association.
