About the position

This position involves providing direct nursing care to patients under the supervision of a Registered Nurse in the Adult Oncology department. The role requires adherence to hospital policies and procedures while ensuring a safe and therapeutic environment for patients across various age groups. The position is casual and requires flexibility in scheduling, including rotating shifts and weekend work.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver safe, direct care to an assigned group of patients under the supervision of an RN Preceptor.
  • Work within Hospitals, Nursing division, and departmental policies.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to implement and document individualized care plans, including discharge planning and patient/family teaching.
  • Administer medication, including IV medication, and document and communicate clinical findings.
  • Assist with special tests and procedures, ensuring proper consent has been obtained.
  • Assist with or institute emergency measures for sudden, adverse developments in patients.
  • Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with hospital standards.
  • Support and implement department and hospital mission and goals.
  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs and workshops.
  • Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Demonstrate a proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve safety protocols.
  • Identify and report/correct environmental conditions that may put a patient at undue risk.
  • Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors, and near misses in a timely manner.
  • Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as a Senior Level student in good standing at UNM College of Nursing.
  • Completion of Basic Nursing Skills Course at Nursing School.
  • CPR for Healthcare/BLS Provider or Professional Rescuers certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Temporary or permanent RN license within 6 weeks of program completion.

  • Bilingual in English, Spanish, Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo.
