About the position

As the Nurse Manager for the Community Living Center at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, Kerrville Campus, you will oversee all aspects of nursing care assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for two of the four residential neighborhoods on the Kerrville Campus. This role requires a strong commitment to ensuring that nursing care is delivered in accordance with established standards of practice. You will report directly to the Chief of Nursing Services for the Geriatric Extended Care service, which encompasses long-term care, short-term skilled care, dementia, hospice, palliative, and respite care residents. Your responsibilities will include first-line supervisory authority, accountability for operations, and ensuring that nursing staff (RNs, LVNs, and NAs) provide timely and effective care. In this position, you will be tasked with planning work for your team, setting priorities, and preparing schedules for completion of tasks. You will assign work based on the capabilities of your subordinates and evaluate their performance. Additionally, you will provide guidance and support to your team, addressing complaints and identifying training needs. Your role will also involve participating in the annual Staffing Methodology and Business Plan processes, making recommendations for personnel actions, and ensuring compliance with performance improvement and regulatory standards. You will actively develop collaborative partnerships with physicians and other clinicians, manage staffing resources, and participate in committees to enhance nursing practice and patient care. As a role model and educator, you will influence care outcomes by implementing evidence-based practices and fostering a culture of accountability and high-quality care. Your leadership will extend to supporting student nurse clinical experiences and orienting new nursing staff. You will also engage in professional organizations to further your leadership and career growth, while promoting an inclusive workplace that values diversity and aligns with the organization's mission and vision.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee nursing care assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for two residential neighborhoods.
  • Report directly to the Chief of Nursing Services for Geriatric Extended Care.
  • Supervise and manage nursing staff (RNs, LVNs, and NAs) to ensure timely and effective care.
  • Plan work for subordinates, set priorities, and prepare schedules for task completion.
  • Assign work based on priorities and the capabilities of subordinates.
  • Evaluate the performance of nursing staff and provide guidance.
  • Address and resolve complaints from subordinates, escalating serious issues as necessary.
  • Identify training needs and provide or arrange for staff development.
  • Assist in the annual Staffing Methodology and Business Plan processes.
  • Make recommendations for personnel actions, including appointments and disciplinary actions.
  • Ensure compliance with performance improvement, patient safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Develop collaborative partnerships with physicians and other clinicians.
  • Manage staffing resources and participate in committees to improve nursing practice.
  • Support student nurse clinical experiences and orient new nursing staff.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state or territory.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • Proficiency in basic written and spoken English is mandatory.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical examination and background investigation.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required.
  • Participation in the COVID-19 vaccination program is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) preferred.
  • Three years of nursing experience.
  • Supervisory experience, including writing evaluations.
  • Experience in acute care, long-term care, rehabilitation, and dementia care.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
