About the position

The Nurse Manager for the Emergency Department at MedStar Health is responsible for overseeing nursing and patient care services within the department. This role involves creating a supportive practice environment, ensuring high-quality patient care, and managing operational, personnel, and financial activities. The Nurse Manager serves as a professional role model, promotes collaboration among healthcare teams, and engages in fiscal planning and management to achieve departmental goals.

Responsibilities

  • Create a professional practice atmosphere and an environment of mentoring and professional development.
  • Build trusting and collaborative relationships with the inter-professional health care team.
  • Establish and maintain a therapeutic and safe environment of care delivery.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for fiscal planning and management of the unit-based budget.
  • Provide clinical leadership through role modeling professional practice behaviors.
  • Integrate ethical standards and SPIRIT values into everyday activities.
  • Support the achievement of Magnet Recognition or Pathways to Excellence programs.
  • Serve as a change agent, assisting others in understanding the importance of change.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Nursing Leadership Team to develop and manage a budget.
  • Hire, evaluate, coach, mentor, promote, counsel, discipline, and terminate associates as necessary.
  • Develop associates based on their strengths and professional advancement needs.
  • Monitor and analyze departmental performance data and identify performance improvement opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and regulations and take corrective action when deficiencies occur.
  • Create and support a patient-centered care environment that fosters optimal patient experience.
  • Communicate with patients' families and act as a resource for associates in dealing with patient/family issues.
  • Investigate and follow through on customer complaints and concerns.
  • Oversee the development of unit-specific orientation, preceptor programs, and competencies for personnel.
  • Engage in unit/department-based activities that enhance cost containment and promote efficient care delivery systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing from a nationally accredited program required.
  • Master's degree in Nursing or health-related field from a nationally accredited program preferred.
  • 5-7 years of nursing experience required.
  • 1-2 years of management and leadership experience preferred.
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in Maryland required.
  • Specialty certification from a nationally recognized nursing organization required within 2 years.
  • CPR certification for healthcare providers required within 90 days.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Knowledge of current trends and developments in nursing and healthcare.
