About the position

The House Operations Manager (HOM) at the University of Iowa is a dynamic nursing leadership role focused on overseeing clinical operations within the adult hospital. This position is equivalent to a nursing supervisor and involves leading a dedicated nursing staff to deliver safe, compassionate, and patient-centered care. The HOM will enhance clinical outcomes, mentor nursing staff, and ensure the efficient functioning of healthcare services, all while advocating for patient needs and maintaining high standards of care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to establish and maintain efficient systems for optimal patient outcomes.
  • Identify trends and determine quality initiatives and priorities.
  • Monitor and maintain unit operating budget within specified targets.
  • Analyze variances and create action plans for corrective action.
  • Understand financial implications of collective bargaining agreements.
  • Implement human resources policies and procedures.
  • Allocate resources to meet quality and productivity expectations.
  • Review patient satisfaction data and develop plans to enhance satisfaction.
  • Ensure units are survey ready and monitor goal implementation.
  • Advocate for unit needs with healthcare leaders.
  • Facilitate multidisciplinary participation in clinical problem solving.
  • Educate and mentor staff in managing complex patient care issues.
  • Provide clinical education and coaching to develop staff competency.
  • Encourage staff participation in evidence-based practice research initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's in Nursing is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa or ability to obtain one upon hire.
  • Considerable (3+ years) of nursing leadership experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Professional experience fostering a welcoming and respectful work environment.
  • Proficiency in computer software applications.
  • Certification in a role or specialty through a recognized professional nursing certification body.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree (in nursing, MBA, or healthcare related) or Doctorate (DNP, PhD).
  • Recent ICU and/or Emergency Medicine experience.
  • Experience working in a large academic medical center.
