About the position

The Nurse Manager for the Operating Room at The Ohio State University Medical Center plays a pivotal role in leading a team of healthcare professionals dedicated to providing high-quality patient care. The Nurse Manager is responsible for creating and facilitating an environment that supports patient-focused care, which is essential for achieving positive patient outcomes. This role involves overseeing patient care operations on a 24-hour basis, which includes planning, organizing, managing, and evaluating the effectiveness of care provided in the designated area. In addition to managing daily operations, the Nurse Manager is tasked with developing strategic goals and processes that align with the Medical Center's mission, vision, and values. This includes evaluating current practices, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing evidence-based standards of practice. The Nurse Manager will also manage the unit's budget, identify cost-saving initiatives, and ensure ongoing collaboration with other departments to enhance patient care services. Leadership in addressing and correcting factors that contribute to problematic outcomes is a key responsibility of this role, as is the coaching and evaluation of patient care staff performance. The Nurse Manager's span of control is determined by the unit's capacity and complexity, as well as the oversight of full-time equivalents (FTEs). This position is critical in ensuring that patients and their families receive the benefits of integrated care through the collaborative efforts of all team members. The Nurse Manager will also play a significant role in promoting staff engagement and resilience, which are essential for maintaining high standards of care and patient satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee plans, organizes, manages, and evaluates patient care operations for designated areas on a 24-hour basis.
  • Develop strategic short, mid, and long-term goals to enhance unit operations.
  • Evaluate and identify achievements and problems in meeting operational goals.
  • Manage, guide, coach, and evaluate the work performance of patient care staff.
  • Promote and ensure ongoing collaboration with other patient care departments.
  • Develop, administer, and manage unit budget plans.
  • Identify, plan, and initiate cost-saving initiatives.
  • Participate in the development of evidence-based standards of practice.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in patient care and organizational processes.
  • Lead efforts to correct factors contributing to problematic outcomes.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing required; Master's degree in Nursing or related field preferred.
  • Current Ohio RN license.
  • Minimum of three to five years of clinical and management experience in a relevant care setting required.
  • Current certification in nursing administration or area of clinical expertise; certification must be achieved within the timeline of eligibility.
  • Two years prior leadership and management experience required.
