About the position

The Nurse Manager (NM) is a first-line supervisory authority responsible for the operation of assigned units within the Skin Risk Management Department at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. The NM oversees the direction and supervision of staff training, development, and performance evaluation, while also providing leadership and serving as a role model in nursing practice. This position emphasizes improving patient care, resolving care coordination issues, and implementing high reliability principles to enhance patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the provision of nursing care to patients with complex care needs utilizing the nursing process.
  • Apply clinical knowledge and judgment to lead staff involvement in planning, decision making, and evaluating outcomes.
  • Improve Veteran/patient driven care by resolving experience issues such as coordination of care and timeliness.
  • Serve as an advocate for patients, families, and caregivers, improving outcomes in the immediate practice setting.
  • Lead the implementation of high reliability principles and I CARE values to increase consistency of care.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and interactions to ensure safe and effective outcomes.
  • Lead teams and contribute to team conferences in all phases of patient care planning.
  • Encourage individual growth and development among staff members.
  • Lead educational initiatives to expand knowledge and improve outcomes in the immediate practice setting.
  • Apply evidence-based practice/research resulting in improved outcomes.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the U.S.
  • Graduation from a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency.
  • English Language Proficiency in basic written and spoken English.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical examination.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience as Nurse Manager or Assistant Nurse Manager preferred.
  • At least 2 years of medical/surgical experience and 1 year of wound/ostomy/continence experience preferred.
  • Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse (WOCN) certification preferred.
