About the position

The Nurse Paralegal at Scott Patton PC plays a crucial role in supporting attorneys in a busy defense litigation practice, particularly focusing on medical negligence and administrative matters. This position involves collaboration with clients and firm employees, providing healthcare consultations, analyzing medical records, and preparing cases for trial. The role requires a blend of nursing expertise and legal knowledge to effectively assist in the defense of employment, commercial, and healthcare-related matters.

Responsibilities

  • Provides healthcare consultations and technical advice by investigating malpractice claims and locating reliable experts.
  • Prepares cases for trial by supporting the legal team with analysis and summarization of medical records.
  • Conducts medical journal research via the Internet or local libraries.
  • Abstracts medical records and organizes them for internal use and client presentation.
  • Analyzes medical records and billings to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of medical evidence.
  • Prepares case analysis and identifies issues, omissions, and discrepancies.
  • Coordinates medical expert deposition preparation and provides information regarding medical experts and physicians.
  • Assists attorneys with the preparation and organization of medical evidence for hearings or trials.
  • Composes and types document production including case analysis memoranda, summaries, and chronologies of medical records.
  • Conducts preliminary medical/legal research as necessary.

Requirements

  • Nursing degree required.
  • 3-5 years of experience in clinical practice and experience in a law firm or legal department preferred.
  • Proficient understanding and utilization of medical terminology, anatomical drawings, laboratory tests, and medications.
  • Thorough understanding of medical conditions to explain or illustrate a diagnosis.
  • Proficient proofreading, redlining, and editing of documents.
  • Full understanding of HIPAA compliance and related regulatory mandates.
  • Research, analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills required.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and knowledge of legal research tools (Westlaw).
  • Superior written and oral communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a law firm or legal consultant/legal department preferred.
