About the position

The Cardiology Nurse Practitioner (NP) position is located within the Specialty Care Medicine department of the Phoenix VA Healthcare System (PVAHCS) in Phoenix, AZ. This role is pivotal in providing comprehensive care to patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings within the Cardiology division. The NP will report directly to the Chief of the Cardiology Section and the Chief of Medicine, ensuring that all clinical and administrative duties are performed to the highest standards. The position requires a thorough understanding of outpatient care and various consultative services, which are essential for effective patient management and coordination of care. As a Cardiology NP, the individual will be responsible for the care and administrative needs of patients, acting as a coordinator between the attending physician and other team members. The NP will provide medical care for both inpatient and outpatient populations, coordinating patient care programs based on the admitting chief complaint. This includes carrying out health promotion and disease prevention activities, completing face-to-face consults, obtaining consent for procedures, and documenting all actions taken. The NP will also initiate and expedite requests for consultations and scheduling of special tests and studies, order diagnostic studies, and perform initial and periodic histories and physical examinations on new patients. In addition to these responsibilities, the NP will prescribe medical supplies and equipment, provide education and counseling to patients and families, and coordinate comprehensive outpatient care for assigned patients. The role also includes requesting imaging studies and performing stress tests, which are critical components of cardiology care. The position is full-time, with a work schedule from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, and offers the potential for performance awards and regular salary increases.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive care to patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings within the Cardiology division.
  • Act as a coordinator between the attending physician and other team members.
  • Carry out health promotion and disease prevention activities, including education and shared decision-making.
  • Complete face-to-face consults and appropriate referrals as warranted, including e-consults and tele-cardiology consults.
  • Obtain consent and document procedures performed for which the NP is responsible.
  • Initiate and expedite requests for consultations and scheduling of special tests and studies.
  • Obtain cultures and order diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, and electrocardiograms (EKGs).
  • Perform initial and periodic histories and physical examinations on new patients and/or outpatient referrals.
  • Prescribe expendable and non-expendable medical supplies, equipment, and prosthetics without countersignatures.
  • Provide education and counseling to patients and families regarding preventive care and medical conditions.
  • Coordinate comprehensive outpatient care for assigned patients.
  • Request imaging studies including x-rays, ultrasound, and CT scans.
  • Perform stress tests.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Must possess and maintain an active, current, full, and unrestricted APN license to practice as an NP in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Must have a post-master's certificate or master's or doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Must be a graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency.
  • Must maintain full and current board certification in an area of clinical specialty from a recognized certifying body.

Nice-to-haves
