About the position

The Nurse Practitioner in Emergency Medicine at Texas Children's Hospital is responsible for providing comprehensive pediatric care in an advanced practice role. This position involves health maintenance for well children, episodic care for ill children, and management of chronic conditions. The NP collaborates with healthcare team members and practices under established clinical guidelines, assuming both independent and interdependent responsibilities in patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and evaluate health assessment data systematically.
  • Obtain comprehensive health, developmental, and family histories on patients.
  • Assess patients' physical status through physical examinations.
  • Differentiate between normal and abnormal findings in patient assessments.
  • Perform or recommend age-appropriate health screening procedures.
  • Provide health maintenance and promotion for children of all ages.
  • Perform and evaluate diagnostic procedures and laboratory tests.
  • Analyze multiple data sources to formulate differential diagnoses in collaboration with physicians.
  • Follow established delegation protocols to manage specific patient problems.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to formulate and document care plans.
  • Evaluate patient responses to interventions and modify care plans accordingly.
  • Present and document patient data, impressions, and care plans accurately.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and work to eliminate communication barriers.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to provide comprehensive patient care.
  • Utilize effective interviewing skills to elicit information from patients and families.
  • Request consultations and initiate referrals for specialized care as appropriate.
  • Serve as an educational resource for patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Apply new knowledge relevant to pediatric nursing to clinical practice.
  • Maintain knowledge base through professional literature and continuing education programs.
  • Participate in departmental and hospital committees promoting quality nursing care.
  • Engage in departmental Quality Improvement programs annually.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in nursing required.
  • Valid RN license from the Texas Board of Nursing or Nursing Licensure Compact required.
  • FNP, NNP, PNP-BC, WHNP-BC, CPNP-AC, or AG-ACNP certification from the Texas Board of Nursing required.
  • Pediatric experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience as a nurse practitioner in the emergency room is strongly preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in Pediatrics is preferred.
