About the position

The Nurse Practitioner (General Surgery) position within the U.S. Government involves providing comprehensive medical care to patients in various settings. The role includes obtaining medical histories, performing physical examinations, establishing diagnoses, formulating care plans, and coordinating follow-up care. The Nurse Practitioner will also evaluate outpatients, promote health, prevent diseases, and educate patients while working closely with a collaborating physician.

Responsibilities

• Obtain medical histories and perform physical examinations.
• Provide and coordinate medical care for assigned patients.
• Establish diagnoses and formulate care plans.
• Evaluate outpatients to determine the need for further health care.
• Carry out health promotion, disease prevention, and patient education activities.
• Order and obtain laboratory specimens and specialty consults.
• Order patient care supplies and prescribe medications.
• Admit and discharge patients in consultation with the collaborating physician.
• Document progress notes and summaries in the patient record.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• Must possess a full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory as a Nurse Practitioner.
• Must have a post-master's certificate or master's or doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner.
• Maintain full and current board certification in a clinical specialty from a recognized certifying body.
• Proficiency in basic written and spoken English is required.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in a surgical setting is preferred.
• Familiarity with VA policies and procedures is a plus.
