About the position

The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner at Penn State Health Medical Group is responsible for providing direct care to newborns during delivery and in the Acute Baby Nursery. This role includes 24-hour in-house coverage, allowing for independent diagnosis and treatment of acute illnesses, as well as routine inpatient care. The position also emphasizes research and education in health promotion and disease prevention, requiring strong skills in neonatal resuscitation and a commitment to transitioning care from Level 1 to Level 2 NICU.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct care to newborns at the time of delivery and in the Acute Baby Nursery.
  • Independently diagnose and treat acute illnesses in newborns.
  • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests such as lab work and x-rays.
  • Prescribe medications as necessary.
  • Participate in research and education focused on health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Assist in the administrative and clinical transition from Level 1 Nursery to Level 2 NICU.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Nursing.
  • Currently licensed to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the state of employment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Two years of experience as a Registered Nurse (RN) required.
  • Up-to-date certifications in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • NICU experience at a facility with Level 2 designation or higher.

Nice-to-haves

  • NICU critical care experience.
  • Two years of experience within their licensure.
  • Neonatology Nurse Practitioner degree.
