About the position

The Nurse Support Technician in the Mother-Baby unit provides essential support to Registered Nurses in delivering direct and indirect patient care. This role involves assisting with daily living activities, monitoring patient conditions, and ensuring a safe and clean environment for patients. The position requires a commitment to patient comfort and safety, as well as adherence to established nursing procedures under supervision.

Responsibilities

• Assists the Registered Nurse in providing direct and indirect patient care.
• Provides care, comfort, and safety of assigned patients under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
• Assists patients in activities of daily living, including bathing, toileting, and oral hygiene.
• Uses proper techniques to avoid infection and contamination.
• Performs delegated nursing care procedures as indicated or requested.
• Observes patients and reports reactions or changes in condition to appropriate nursing personnel.
• Distributes patients' trays and nourishments, assists with feeding if necessary, and collects trays after meals.
• Maintains and stocks patients' rooms in a clean and orderly condition.
• Assists in the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients, including transportation.
• Performs routine vital signs, intakes and outputs, weights, and finger sticks for blood sugars.
• Obtains lab specimens such as urine collections and sputum cultures as appropriate.
• Sets up O2 therapy and reinforces use of incentive spirometry.
• Conducts bladder scans and performs oral suctioning as directed.
• Uses and operates an EKG machine as directed by the Registered Nurse.
• Performs simple dressing changes and assists with IV/saline lock procedures as directed.
• Utilizes electronic medical records for appropriate record keeping.
• Cleans and stocks supply shelves and performs other related duties as assigned.
• Precepts new staff as directed.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Current registration with the Maryland State Board of Nursing as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
• Certified as a Patient Care Technician (PCT).
• Heartsaver (CPR Certification) required.
• At least 1 year of current experience in direct patient care, preferably in Med/Surg patient population.
• Ability to read and write English to provide basic patient care and understand detailed instructions.
• Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients, visitors, physicians, and other staff.
• Basic computer skills.
