The Nursing Assistant and Unit Secretary position in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at York Hospital is a full-time role that requires working night shifts from 7 PM to 7 AM, including every third weekend and rotating holidays. The SICU is a specialized 10-bed unit dedicated to providing care for critically ill surgical patients aged 18 and older, and it also serves as an overflow unit for trauma and medical patients. The role encompasses a variety of responsibilities, including both nursing and administrative tasks, aimed at supporting the care delivery team and ensuring the smooth operation of the unit. As a Nursing Assistant and Unit Secretary, you will act as a receptionist for visitors and serve as a central contact for telephone calls, managing both paper and electronic communications, including laboratory and test results. You will interact daily with patients, visitors, physicians, and staff, requiring a positive and helpful attitude. Your duties will include accurately transcribing physician orders, maintaining medical records, scheduling patient care services, and performing clinical support tasks such as taking vital signs and assisting patients with daily living activities. You will also be responsible for inventory management, ensuring that patient rooms and nursing areas are stocked with necessary supplies and equipment. In addition to providing direct patient care, you will monitor patient conditions, report changes to the appropriate personnel, and assist in the preparation and transportation of patients for tests and procedures. You will be expected to maintain confidentiality while handling sensitive information and to demonstrate knowledge of patient care principles across different age groups.
