About the position

The Nursing Assistant position at the Grand Island VA Medical Center is a vital role within the Community Living Center, part of the VA Midwest Health Care Network (VISN 23). This position is designed for individuals who are committed to providing exceptional care to Veterans who require extended hospital care and short-term rehabilitation. The Nursing Assistant will work closely with a team of healthcare professionals to assist Veterans with activities of daily living, skilled nursing tasks, and specialized care for those with dementia. The role emphasizes a holistic approach to healthcare, aligning with the VA's mission to empower Veterans to take charge of their health and well-being. In this position, the Nursing Assistant will be responsible for taking and recording vital signs, assisting with personal hygiene, feeding, and mobility. They will also perform basic medical procedures such as blood glucose testing and bladder scans, set up necessary medical equipment, and escort patients throughout the facility. A key aspect of the role is to promote patient participation in therapeutic activities, fostering independence and self-reliance among Veterans. The Nursing Assistant will also be trained to recognize and respond to patient emergencies, providing basic life support when necessary. The work schedule for this position is full-time, requiring flexibility to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis. The Nursing Assistant will document patient care activities in the electronic patient record system and interact with patients' families to ensure a supportive environment. This role is essential in creating a healing environment that aligns with the VA's Whole Health System of care, which focuses on personalized health plans and community connections for Veterans.

Responsibilities

  • Takes and records temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respirations, pulse oximetry, height, and weight.
  • Assists with activities related to bathing, shaving, feeding, oral hygiene, ambulation, and dressing.
  • Performs basic procedures such as blood glucose testing and bladder scans.
  • Sets up equipment such as oxygen tanks, suction canisters, and cardiac monitors.
  • Escorts patients to different areas of the facility as needed.
  • Assists the RN or LPN in rehabilitation goals and ensures overall safety of patients.
  • Promotes Veteran participation in the therapeutic community by fostering self-reliance and independence.
  • Recognizes and supports suicide prevention initiatives.
  • Recognizes and responds to patient emergencies, initiating life-saving measures while waiting for help to arrive.
  • Documents the patients' daily living activities in the electronic patient record system.
  • Interacts with patients' families, helping them to feel comfortable.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Completion of at least one year of education above high school with courses related to the nursing assistant occupation or completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a Nursing Assistant.
  • Six months of general experience demonstrating the ability to acquire the knowledge and skills to perform the work of a Nursing Assistant.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a medical field such as licensed practical nurse, health technician, or hospital corpsman.
  • Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care or health care.
