About the position

The Clinical Support Tech II (Nursing Assistant II + Clerical) position is a Per Diem role within the GI Surgery Acute Care Unit at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. This unit is a 28-bed, acute care inpatient nursing facility that primarily serves adult post-surgical patients dealing with weight loss issues, gastrointestinal cancers, and complex non-cancer GI-related illnesses. The interdisciplinary team is dedicated to providing evidence-based, high-quality care, and is affiliated with the renowned Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, known for its expertise in colorectal, GI, and endocrine malignancies. The nursing team is expected to work within the full scope of their practice in a multi-disciplinary setting, ensuring comprehensive care for patients who require close post-operative observation and various therapeutic interventions. The role involves a combination of clinical support and clerical duties. Clinical responsibilities include assisting healthcare providers during examinations and procedures, monitoring patient conditions, and providing direct personal care such as bathing, dressing, and feeding. The position also requires the measurement and recording of vital signs, specimen collection, and basic wound care. On the clerical side, the role encompasses a variety of tasks such as organizing workloads, greeting visitors, transcribing physician orders, maintaining medical records, and performing quality assurance audits. The position demands a proactive approach to patient care and administrative support, ensuring that the unit operates smoothly and efficiently. This is a Per Diem position, requiring a minimum commitment of 12 hours every two weeks, with shifts rotating between day and night (7am-7:30pm & 7pm-7:30am) and includes weekend and holiday rotations. Self-scheduling is utilized to accommodate the needs of the unit and staff. Candidates must complete the required hospital orientation, which occurs Monday through Thursday from 7:30am to 5:00pm. The role is integral to the functioning of the unit, contributing to the overall mission of UNC Health Care to improve the health and well-being of the communities served.

Responsibilities

  • Assists physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, as well as procurement of equipment and supplies.
  • Critically reviews patient care documentation making note of any significant changes in the patient's condition and makes an immediate report to a registered nurse or physician.
  • Provides a variety of clerical tasks including organizing and prioritizing workload, greeting and directing visitors, researching information as requested by nurses and physicians, reviewing orders for logic and clarity, revising orders as requested by the nurse, answering the telephone/patient call lights, transcribing physician orders, and maintaining medical records.
  • Performs routine quality assurance audits, safety checks, and inventory of supplies.
  • Provides clinical support assistance including cleaning the work area, maintaining office equipment, troubleshooting common software and hardware problems, changing linens, checking supply inventory, re-stocking supplies, transporting patients/supplies/specimens, and assisting in the orientation of new employees and students.
  • Provides direct personal care to patients as outlined in plan of care activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and assisting with ambulation.
  • Measures and records vital signs, and patient height and weight.
  • May be responsible for specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, and/or postural drainage.
  • Reinforces routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician and documents patient understanding of instructions.
  • Distributes patient education materials at the request of patients and/or health care providers.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or General Education Development (GED)
  • Listed as a Nursing Assistant I by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
  • Licensed as a Nursing Assistant II by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • One (1) year of clerical or customer service experience
  • Three (3) months of nursing assistant experience
  • Fluency in verbal and written English language
  • Capability to develop computer skills if not competent.
