Responsibilities

  • Perform routine work in the care of patients, including making beds, changing linens, and giving baths.
  • Care for incontinent patients and assist with personal hygiene.
  • Lift, move, and transport patients safely.
  • Measure and record patient intake and output of foods and fluids as directed.
  • Collect urine, stool, and sputum specimens; test urine and record results.
  • Assist professional staff in performing tests, procedures, and examinations of patients in critical care units.
  • Serve trays, feed patients, and remove trays after meals.
  • Take and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
  • Maintain patient unit in a neat and clean manner; maintain supplies and remove soiled linen.
  • Assist in a central supply unit; clean, sterilize, package, set up, and distribute medical equipment and supplies.
  • May assist in ambulance or clinic car service; may administer CPR and first aid.
  • Keep routine records and reports of patient care activities.
  • Participate in staff development training programs.

Requirements

  • Six months as a Nursing Assistant Trainee at San Joaquin County General Hospital or six months performing non-professional nursing work in an acute care hospital.
  • One year performing non-professional nursing work in a convalescent hospital, home health care agency, or similar sub-acute facility may also qualify.
  • Successful completion of appropriate clinical training in a Licensed Vocational Nurse or Registered Nurse curriculum may substitute for the required experience.
  • Specialized training or experience may be required for assignment to specialized areas.
