About the position

The Resource Pool Nursing Assistant position at the Northern Arizona VA Health Care System involves providing direct care to veterans, monitoring their health, and assisting with various nursing procedures. The role requires effective communication with healthcare teams and participation in treatment planning, ensuring a safe and clean environment for patients. This position is essential in supporting the healthcare needs of veterans and requires flexibility in scheduling due to the 24/7 nature of the hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes glucose monitoring machine to receive glucose readings for veterans and refers deviations to appropriate healthcare staff.
  • Provides direct care for complex veterans.
  • Makes observations of subtle changes in resident's condition and acts accordingly within the NA's assigned role.
  • Documents care given, observations, and responses on appropriate tools or forms.
  • Responds appropriately to subtle patient changes by contacting the appropriate nursing personnel.
  • Administers complete tracheostomy care, including suctioning.
  • Monitors and documents patient intake and output, reporting deviations timely and accurately.
  • Performs nursing procedures within scope of practice according to policies and standard procedures.
  • Works on small group activities with veterans/residents according to the treatment plan.
  • Actively participates in Treatment Planning Meetings.
  • Utilizes equipment to promote veteran self-care, such as lift equipment and Hydro sound Tubs.
  • Verbally provides patient information to the treatment team for inclusion in the care plan.
  • Enters information about the residents' condition in the chart, utilizing appropriate formats.
  • Participates in maintaining a clean, safe environment for the patient/resident.
  • Removes defective equipment, reports hazards, and observes safety regulations.
  • Serves as the unit safe patient handling liaison and as a preceptor and mentor to other NAs.
  • Orients members of the healthcare team to the units as appropriate.
  • Functions as a member of the unit base counsel.
  • Manages distributed patient behavior and appropriately intervenes and requests assistance from other healthcare members.
  • Initiates basic life support and takes appropriate actions.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Six months of general experience or one year of education above high school related to the NA occupation.
  • Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related training course may also meet experience requirements for GS-3.
  • Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan.
  • Ability to observe patients/residents' physical or emotional status and refer deviations to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families, and other health professionals.
