About the position

The Nursing Assistant (NA) in the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Service at the Department of Veterans Affairs provides essential direct and indirect care to Veterans with spinal cord injuries. This role is integral to the multidisciplinary treatment team, focusing on motivating patients towards their treatment goals while addressing their complex medical needs. The position offers opportunities for professional growth, with varying responsibilities based on the grade level, from entry-level to full performance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and indirect care to SCI Veteran patients.
  • Assist with personal care tasks such as bathing, grooming, and dressing.
  • Take and record vital signs, height, weight, and fluid intake/output.
  • Observe, record, and report changes in patient behavior and condition.
  • Utilize proper feeding techniques and assist with eating and hydration.
  • Demonstrate basic technical skills to facilitate optimal patient functioning.
  • Implement infection control procedures and techniques to prevent the spread of microorganisms.
  • Act as a preceptor and mentor for new CNAs regarding infection control and facility policies.
  • Modify behavior in response to patients' psychosocial characteristics and needs.
  • Assist with the transport of patients as directed.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Six months of general experience or one year of education above high school related to nursing care.
  • Completion of a specialized training course related to nursing assistance may also qualify for GS-3 level.
  • Ability to perform basic technical and personal care skills for patients with spinal cord injuries.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a medical field such as licensed practical nurse or health technician.
  • Knowledge of restorative nursing principles and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
