About the position

Long Beach VA Health Care System is looking for a Nursing Assistant to join the Spinal Cord Injury team. This position is a permanent, full-time role located in Long Beach, CA, with a salary range of $38,224 - $62,403 per year, depending on the grade level (GS 3 - 5). The job requires participation in various nursing tasks and responsibilities to ensure the care and safety of veterans.

Responsibilities

  • Completes all care assignments in a safe and timely manner.
  • Actively participates in unit level quality improvement activities and attends huddles, team meetings, and assigned committees.
  • Completes applicable documentation per policy including Intake/Output, daily weights, vital signs, pain score, and hourly rounding.
  • Uses appropriate equipment for safe patient handling including SCDs, bladder scanner, Bucks tractions, lift equipment, CPM, and glucometer.
  • Adheres to all reusable medical equipment (RME) standard operating procedures.
  • Participates in the equipment inventory process.
  • Implements appropriate interventions to prevent/reduce hospital acquired pressure ulcers and patient falls under the direction of the RN/LVN.
  • Performs nursing procedures within scope of practice according to policies and standard procedures.
  • May assist with surgical skin preparation including hair clipping and holding limbs.
  • Maintains a clean, safe environment for the Veteran.
  • Maintains BLS certification and demonstrates proper procedure in initiating CPR.
  • Transports patients safely and professionally as assigned using handoff communication tool.
  • Monitors patients according to levels of observation.
  • Provides assistance with coordination of daily activities under the direction of RN/LVN.
  • Provides assistance to all levels of clinical and non-clinical staff when warranted.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required.
  • Participation in the COVID-19 vaccination program is required.
  • Six months of general experience or one year of education above high school related to the NA occupation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience as a Nursing Assistant or in another medical field.
  • Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related training course of study.
