About the position

The UW Health Nursing Assistant Apprenticeship Program is an accelerated training program designed to equip individuals with the necessary skills and experience to work as Nursing Assistants in a hospital setting. This program is set to begin on December 30, 2024, and will last for three weeks, during which participants will engage in both classroom instruction and clinical practice at University Hospital in Madison, WI. The program is full-time, running Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, allowing participants to gain hands-on experience while learning about the rewarding nature of patient care. As a Nursing Assistant, participants will be involved in direct patient care tasks, assisting with activities of daily living, patient transport, and ensuring that the patient care team has the necessary supplies and support. The role requires strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with hospital staff, patients, and their families. Upon successful completion of the program and registration on the nurse aide registry, participants will have the opportunity to interview for available Nursing Assistant positions throughout the hospital. Responsibilities

  • Participate in direct patient care tasks, processes, and procedures to assist the patient care team.
  • Assist with activities of daily living for patients.
  • Transport patients as needed within the hospital.
  • Stock supplies and ensure the patient care area is well-equipped.
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal skills with hospital staff, visitors, patients, and their families.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • CPR/BLS certification, which may be obtained during the apprenticeship.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting is preferred but not mandatory.
