About the position

The position involves assisting Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in providing patient care for psychiatric and long-term medical/surgical patients within a correctional facility. The role emphasizes maintaining security while delivering compassionate care, ensuring a humane environment for individuals preparing for reentry into the community. The incumbent will be responsible for various patient care activities, including assisting with admissions and dismissals, reporting changes in patient conditions, and maintaining a clean and sterile environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist RNs and LPNs in performing patient care activities for psychiatric and long-term medical/surgical patients.
  • Rotate with other nursing assistants in assignments, working variable hours.
  • Assist with admissions and dismissals, including delivery of medical records as necessary.
  • Report pertinent data in a timely manner to the medical staff, including changes in patient's condition requiring assessment and/or further intervention.
  • Prepare patient care area by restocking equipment and supplies needed by physicians or nurses performing treatments or exams.
  • Assist physicians and nurses with exams or treatments, including turning and positioning of patients, draping, and use of safety restraints as necessary.
  • Procure proper equipment needed, maintain clean and sterile fields, secure specimens for laboratory analysis, label specimens, and transport them to the laboratory.
  • Maintain security of the institution as part of correctional responsibilities.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Education: Four-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, or one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service.
  • Experience in providing personal nursing care, such as pre- and post-operative care.
  • Experience in caring for mentally ill and long-term patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior.
  • Experience assisting physicians and nurses with exams or treatments dealing with patient care.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a correctional facility setting.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or similar.
