About the position

The Nursing Assistant position at the Department of Veterans Affairs Maine Healthcare System involves providing essential care to patients across various units, including Emergency, Intensive Care, Mental Health, and more. This full-time role requires assisting licensed nursing staff and other healthcare professionals in delivering patient-centered care while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to safety protocols. The position is critical in supporting patients in acute, sub-acute, or chronic states of illness, ensuring their comfort and well-being under close supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Assist higher graded Nursing Assistants and licensed nursing staff in patient care.
  • Provide personal hygiene, nutrition, and support with activities of daily living (ADLs).
  • Initiate and assist with CPR as per hospital policy under RN direction.
  • Participate in patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Prepare patient care rooms for new admissions or transfers.
  • Perform range of motion exercises and assist with patient mobility.
  • Document vital signs and nursing care in electronic medical records.
  • Maintain infection control practices and universal precautions.
  • Monitor patients receiving IV fluids and report any issues to nursing staff.
  • Provide care for behavioral health patients, including those requiring close observation.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Six months of general experience or one year of education above high school related to nursing care.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory.
  • Ability to perform basic nursing skills and assist in patient care under supervision.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting as a Nursing Assistant or similar role.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and basic nursing procedures.
