About the position

The Nursing Care Assistant I - Health Unit Coordinator at Duke University Health System plays a vital role in supporting patient care within the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Neurology departments. This position involves performing non-professional nursing duties and clerical tasks under the supervision of registered nurses and licensed practical nurses, ensuring high-quality care and excellent customer service for patients and their families.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients, equipment, and supplies for specific procedures and provide manual assistance as required.
  • Obtain and record patient data for medical records, noting and informing RN/LPN of information collected.
  • Administer treatment and personal care procedures to patients, including feeding, bathing, shaving, and changing clothing.
  • Assist with ambulation, enemas, skin care, and bowel and bladder elimination as needed.
  • Participate in teaching activities by reinforcing instructions provided by RN and/or physician.
  • Assist physicians and nurses with physical examinations, including positioning patients and changing non-sterile dressings.
  • Take and record vital signs, record intake and output, and apply ice bags as necessary.
  • Note and report any changes in patients' conditions to the supervising nurse.
  • Turn and position patients, set up and feed patients, and provide fresh drinking water.
  • Perform finger sticks for blood glucose testing, with appropriate training.
  • Assist with admission, discharge, and transportation of patients.
  • Follow standard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required.
  • Collect, deliver, and conduct routine tests on patient specimens.
  • Clean assigned areas and stock and replenish supplies and equipment as required.
  • Participate in own professional development by maintaining required skills validation and attending educational offerings.
  • Support the development of other staff and formal learners.
  • Perform sterile dressing changes for wounds over 48 hours old, IV fluid assistance activities, oral/nasogastric feeding, and urinary catheterizations/irrigation.
  • Provide general clerical support, including greeting patients and visitors, answering the telephone, and accessing the electronic medical record.

Requirements

  • Current Nurse Aide I Registry listing with the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services Division of Health Service Regulation.
  • Graduation from high school or GED; or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Basic Life Support certification from American Heart Association.

Nice-to-haves
