About the position

The Nursing Technician/Unit Secretary in the Emergency Department plays a crucial role in the patient care team, working under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Physician. This position is primarily focused on providing care to a designated group of patients, ensuring their needs are met in a timely and efficient manner. The Nurse Tech/Unit Secretary is responsible for a variety of tasks that support both patient care and the administrative functions of the department. This includes direct patient care, documentation, and communication with other healthcare team members. The role requires a strong commitment to patient safety and privacy, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with others in a fast-paced environment. In addition to providing direct care, the Nurse Tech/Unit Secretary is expected to reinforce patient education regarding their conditions and treatment plans. Effective communication is essential, as the individual must interact with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals to ensure a cohesive approach to patient care. The position also involves clerical duties such as transcribing physician orders, maintaining medical records, and preparing necessary paperwork for patient transfers. The Nurse Tech/Unit Secretary must be proactive in identifying changes in patient needs and suggesting appropriate adjustments to the nursing care plan. Overall, this role is vital in maintaining the operational flow of the Emergency Department, ensuring that both patient care and administrative tasks are handled efficiently and effectively. Responsibilities

  • Provides care to patients under the direction of Registered Professional Nurse.
  • Initiates suggestions to RN to clarify, alter, or individualize nursing care for changing patient needs.
  • Reinforces patients' teaching relative to presenting conditions.
  • Communicates effectively with all members of the patient care team.
  • Promotes cooperation and teamwork between departments.
  • Documents care provided in the medical record accurately, timely and in an appropriate manner according to policies & procedures.
  • Provides transport and safe patient care during transport utilizing appropriate protocols.
  • Applies and maintains restraining devices as directed.
  • Performs venipunctures to collect serum.
  • Monitors suicidal patients in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Assists in all aspects of patient care as directed while maintaining patient privacy.
  • Checks, cleans and stocks rooms with supplies and linens in preparation for daily work schedule.
  • Responsible for performing equipment checks as directed, reporting all instances of malfunctioning to the nurse in charge of the department at the time the malfunction is determined.
  • Performs clerical functions utilizing appropriate communication skills as directed.
  • Transcribes physician orders and performs order entry accurately, efficiently and in order of priority.
  • Prepares medical record for distribution to medical records and department copies as appropriate.
  • Prepares paperwork associated with patient transfer to other facilities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current EMT, CNA or Medical Assistant certification for Emergency Department required.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Maintain licensure and continuing education as appropriate for scope of practice.
  • Word processing and computer application experience and knowledge desired.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
