The NUS is expected to handle initial issues, complaints, and problems impartially, even in high-stress situations. A basic working knowledge of standard office equipment and multiple computer system applications is essential, including skills in phone communication, filing, patient chart maintenance, supply ordering, and data collection. The ability to perform effectively in a high-volume, fast-paced environment with multiple stimuli is crucial. Additionally, the NUS should possess a high level of interpersonal skills and judgment to gather and exchange information with a variety of internal and external customers, responding to patients, visitors, and staff in a professional manner while maintaining a positive attitude and high energy level.

Responsibilities

  • Provide supportive customer-focused introduction to Maine Medical Center.
  • Engage in continuous professional interaction with customers while providing clinical support.
  • Direct the flow of the unit in conjunction with lead positions to support patient and family-centered care.
  • Participate in advanced unit involvement in projects and hospital-wide activities.
  • Facilitate initial issues, complaints, and problems in a high-stress environment.
  • Lead or contribute to unit-based or institutional committees for quality improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Three years of secretarial experience, with at least one year at Maine Medical Center.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures, current initiatives, and organizational structure of the unit and Department of Nursing.
  • Accountability, accuracy, time management, and independent thinking skills.
  • Discretion and judgment with a working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to remain impartial while addressing issues in a high-stress environment.
  • Basic working knowledge of standard office equipment and multiple computer system applications.
