About the position

The Nutrition Educator position at the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County is designed to support public health initiatives by providing nutrition education and counseling to clients participating in the WIC Program. The role involves certifying clients, developing nutrition care plans, and promoting breastfeeding, all while adhering to the agency's mission to improve the health of Floridians. The educator will also assist in training new staff and contribute to the overall nutrition program development.

Responsibilities

  • Certifies clients for participation in the WIC Program according to the WIC Manual DHM 150-24.
  • Provides nutrition counseling, education, and follow-up services to WIC Program clients.
  • Promotes and supports breastfeeding among WIC clients.
  • Develops nutrition care plans and documents information in the WIC data system.
  • Follows policies and procedures for data management and operation of the WIC data system (FL WiSE).
  • Develops high-risk nutrition care plans for high-risk clients.
  • Schedules follow-up counseling sessions.
  • Performs anthropometric duties including hemoglobin tests as needed.
  • Designs nutrition educational materials for the WIC Program.
  • Assists with training of new WIC nutrition staff in certification and counseling processes.
  • Assists with the development and evaluation of the nutrition program plan.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Nutrition, Public Health Nutrition, Dietetics, or Food and Nutrition from an accredited school.
  • Utilization of anthropometric and hematology equipment, as well as computer equipment.
  • Knowledge of normal nutrition principles and food needs throughout the life cycle.
  • Ability to determine nutritional risk and needs for individuals.
  • Ability to provide nutrition education and breastfeeding promotion in group or individual settings.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to provide client-centered nutrition counseling.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least one year of WIC program experience as a Nutritionist or Nutrition Educator.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • A valid driver's license.
