About the position

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking a Design Review Manager/Landscape Architect to enhance and uphold design standards for the public right-of-way. This role involves managing design and review activities, coordinating projects with various city commissions, and establishing best practices in street design and sustainability. The position is integral to the Urban Design Unit's mission of fostering safety, mobility, and environmental stewardship in urban planning and infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the division's design and review activities for urban design, landscape architecture, and transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Coordinate projects subject to the Public Design Commission (PDC) and Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) review processes.
  • Perform and manage expert design services in support of major agency initiatives and priority projects.
  • Investigate and establish best practices in street design and sustainability.
  • Refine and develop design policies, practices, standards, and specifications.

Requirements

  • A valid New York State Registration as a Landscape Architect.
  • A master's degree in landscape architecture from an accredited institution and three years of relevant experience, or four years of full-time satisfactory experience in landscape architectural work.
  • Experience as a major contributor or project leader on complex projects within the last three years.

Nice-to-haves

  • Graduate degree in landscape architecture, urban design, architecture, city and regional planning, or environmental planning.
  • Expertise in design and construction demonstrated through a varied design portfolio.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhino, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent graphic communication, writing, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Involvement in pedagogy and professional mentorship.
  • Strong knowledge of sustainability and universal design principles.
