About the position

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for the Pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit & Pediatric Neurology Service at the University of Michigan provides comprehensive inpatient care to pediatric and young adult patients. This role involves direct patient management, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, and participation in quality improvement initiatives, ensuring high standards of care in a dynamic clinical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide inpatient care to pediatric and young adult patients in the Pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and Pediatric Neurology service.
  • Perform histories and physical examinations, order and interpret diagnostic studies, and develop a plan of care.
  • Attend team-based rounds and process patient discharges.
  • Stabilize and transfer patients to the Pediatric ICU when necessary.
  • Counsel and educate patients and their families, providing necessary support.
  • Collaborate with consulting services for multidisciplinary care.
  • Respond to calls from patients, families, and care teams.
  • Contribute to department-specific quality improvement initiatives.
  • Engage in professional development and attend continuing education programs.
  • Triage calls from non-admitted patients and outside hospitals.

Requirements

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification as an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in Michigan with two years of inpatient pediatric APP experience.
  • Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
  • DEA license and AHA Approved BLS and PALS certifications.
  • Two years of clinical experience in pediatrics.

Nice-to-haves

  • One year of nursing/clinical experience with pediatric epilepsy or neurology patients.
  • One year of experience practicing as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant.
  • Demonstrated high level of critical thinking and medical knowledge.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize in a busy clinical practice.
