About the position

The O&M Technician I/Flushing Technician position at Veolia North America is a full-time role focused on the day-to-day monitoring and basic operations of plant and pump/booster stations. This role involves performing routine lab tests and engaging in basic corrective and preventative maintenance activities. The technician will operate equipment both manually and through instrumentation panels, computer terminals, and programmable logic control units, adhering to established process control procedures. Monitoring and observing operating conditions is crucial, as is accurately recording observations and data in a shift log. The technician will also diagnose basic operational problems and take corrective actions as per established procedures. In addition to operational duties, the technician will perform routine cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, inspection, and minor repairs (collectively referred to as CLAIR) on various machines and related equipment, including pumps, engines, centrifuges, generators, valves, and more. Reporting and documenting the results of work performed is essential, as is promptly reporting any operational issues to the Lead or Supervisor. The role also includes collecting samples of water, wastewater, industrial waste, and other materials, performing field tests, and preparing chemical solutions while monitoring supplies and recommending reorders. The technician will be responsible for performing routine lab tests, instrument calibration, and learning to inspect and troubleshoot mechanical issues. This includes dismantling equipment to access and repair defective parts, using hand tools and precision measuring devices, and ensuring that equipment is reassembled and tested for safe and efficient operation. The role requires manual labor, including cleaning equipment and facilities, and may involve facility maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs and repairing windows. The technician will also learn to estimate time and material costs for various projects and may assist in other areas of the facility as directed.

Responsibilities

  • Operates equipment manually and through instrumentation panels, computer terminals, and programmable logic control units following process control procedures.
  • Monitors and observes operating conditions, records observations and data in shift log.
  • Diagnoses basic operational problems and takes corrective action per procedure.
  • Performs routine CLAIR (cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, inspection and minor repair) on machines and related equipment.
  • Reports and documents results of work performed and enters into appropriate database.
  • Collects water, wastewater, industrial waste, groundwater, sludge, residuals and/or gas samples according to schedule.
  • Performs field tests (chemical, physical and biological) to pace chemical dosages for process and odor control units.
  • Prepares chemical solutions, monitors supplies and recommends reorder.
  • Performs routine lab tests and prepares reports per procedure.
  • Performs routine instrument calibration for portable meters.
  • Learns to inspect and becomes proficient at mechanical troubleshooting to determine repairs needed.
  • Dismantles equipment to gain access to and repairs defective parts using hand tools, power tools and precision measuring and testing devices.
  • Re-assembles and tests equipment ensuring safe and efficient operating condition is restored.
  • Performs manual labor including cleaning equipment, facilities and grounds as required.
  • Operates vehicles, mobile equipment and material handling equipment for operational and maintenance purposes.
  • Performs facility maintenance and repair and may replace or install light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, damaged glass, windows, doors, partitions, ceiling or floor tiles, door locks, carpet, and/or paint.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED with the ability to read, write and comprehend English.
  • Six months to two years of experience in a related position, preferably in a similar environment.
  • Experience using material handling equipment, pressure gauges, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Experience using power, pneumatic, hydraulic, and hand tools and shop tools such as drill press, band saw, bench grinder, torque wrench preferred.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Some vocational training and mechanical aptitude preferred.
  • Ability to diagnose basic and routine process and mechanical problems and take remedial corrective action.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to operate programs for process control and maintenance management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and independently perform assigned duties and meet production and quality goals.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional responsibilities.
