About the position

The Occupational Health Nurse position at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is located within the U.S. Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, MD. This role is pivotal in planning and administering the Occupational Medical Surveillance Program (OMSEP) for the Coast Guard's full-service Shipyard, which is characterized by its large and complex industrial operations. The Occupational Health Nurse plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and health of trade workers engaged in heavy industrial operations related to ship repair and manufacturing. As a civilian member of the Coast Guard, the nurse contributes significantly to the overall well-being of the workforce. Typical work assignments for this position include scheduling and conducting required pre-employment physicals, medical surveillance appointments, annual physical examinations, and follow-ups. The nurse will collaborate with various personnel, including doctors, physicians, and military corpsmen, to ensure comprehensive occupational health services are provided. Additionally, the nurse will assist the Occupational Safety & Health Staff with respiratory protection evaluations, including spirometry and fit testing of respirators. Providing acute nursing care for injuries and illnesses that occur at the Coast Guard Yard is also a key responsibility, ensuring that initial treatment is administered before further medical intervention. The role involves educating the workforce on Occupational Safety and Health requirements, such as respiratory training, hearing conservation, and eye protection. The nurse will also work with multiple computer-based systems for recordkeeping and information processing related to medical evaluations, reviews, and exams for civilian employees. Furthermore, the nurse will assist the Coast Guard Yard Clinic with vaccination events and contact tracing to manage the transmission of communicable diseases effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and administer the Occupational Medical Surveillance Program (OMSEP) for the Coast Guard's Shipyard.
  • Schedule and conduct pre-employment physicals and medical surveillance appointments.
  • Assist in annual physical examinations and follow-ups for employees.
  • Collaborate with medical personnel for occupational health training and specific injury or illness reviews.
  • Assist the Occupational Safety & Health Staff with respiratory protection evaluations, including spirometry and respirator fit testing.
  • Provide acute nursing care for injuries and illnesses occurring at the Coast Guard Yard.
  • Educate the workforce on Occupational Safety and Health requirements, including respiratory training and hearing conservation.
  • Maintain records and process information related to medical evaluations and exams for civilian employees.
  • Assist with vaccination events and contact tracing for communicable diseases.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a U.S. state or territory.
  • Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated state accrediting agency.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in federal service, including providing quality patient care and wellness to active duty and reserve Coast Guard members.
  • Experience in developing rehabilitative programs and initiating standard and emergency care independently.
