About the position

This position at Sysco involves establishing and leading the planning, directing, administering, and evaluating of Occupational Health Services to ensure a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment. The Occupational Health Nurse will work closely with various departments including Operations, Human Resources, Safety, and Finance to support Sysco's overall Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) goals and objectives. The role is based at the Sysco Long Island clinic located at 199 Lowell Ave, Central Islip, NY, and requires a commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy workforce through various health services and programs. The Occupational Health Nurse will be responsible for managing an onsite health service clinic, which includes researching, planning, and producing annual budgetary projections for necessary supplies, equipment, professional services, and training. The nurse will develop and implement policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal healthcare regulations, including OSHA rules and regulations. Ensuring compliance with the State Nurse Practice Act, FMLA, ADA, STD, LTD, EPA, and HIPAA is also a critical part of the role. In addition to administrative duties, the nurse will supervise the Drug Testing Program, perform Breath Alcohol testing, and plan training programs for managers and associates on various Occupational Health topics. The role includes executing clinical services and directing nursing care for both occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses, participating as a first responder to onsite accidents, and managing the health components of the onsite Fitness Center where applicable. The Occupational Health Nurse will also be involved in disaster response planning, health and wellness promotion programs, and maintaining confidential associate health files. This position requires excellent interpersonal skills, project management abilities, and the capacity to work flexible hours to meet the health needs of associates.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and manage an onsite health service clinic.
  • Research, plan and produce annual budgetary projections for supplies, equipment, professional services, and training.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures in compliance with healthcare regulations and OSHA rules.
  • Ensure completion of OSHA mandated programs and record-keeping standards.
  • Supervise the Drug Testing Program and collect drug screen specimens according to NIDA guidelines.
  • Perform Breath Alcohol testing and plan training programs for managers and associates.
  • Execute clinical services and direct nursing care for occupational and non-occupational injuries.
  • Participate as a first responder to onsite accidents and oversee the Medical Emergency Response Team.
  • Practice case management for work-related injuries and manage return-to-work evaluations.
  • Compile and submit injury and accident reports required by corporate and regulatory agencies.
  • Manage the administration of the occupational injury program and work with external healthcare providers.
  • Collaborate in disaster response planning and risk communication.
  • Plan and implement health and wellness promotion programs for associates.
  • Manage the health components of the onsite Fitness Center.
  • Prepare reports and maintain associate health files in a HIPAA compliant manner.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Nursing required; Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.
  • 5 years of nursing experience, with at least one year in an occupational health role.
  • Work experience in a warehouse, distribution, or manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Practice where the facility resides.
  • ABOHN Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN or COHN-S).
  • Certification in Case Management by ABOHN or CCMC.
  • First Aid, AED, and CPR Certification.
  • DOT Drug Screen Collector Certification.
  • Breath Alcohol Technician Certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Emergency or critical care experience a plus.
  • Previous experience in Safety and Workers' Compensation laws and regulations preferred.
  • Bi-Lingual in English and Spanish a plus.
