About the position

The Occupational Health Nurse at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) plays a crucial role in managing occupational health services and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. This position involves working closely with various safety officers to identify job hazards and enroll employees in appropriate medical surveillance programs. The nurse will provide direct medical surveillance, testing, and documentation, contributing to a safe and healthy work environment for VCU employees.

Responsibilities

  • Enrolls and manages occupational health surveillance programs including respiratory protection, hearing conservation, and bloodborne pathogens.
  • Manages RedCap and SciShield databases, maintaining employee enrollment in medical services.
  • Provides medical clearance documentation for respirator users according to Virginia Nursing Scope of Practice.
  • Assists in scheduling and performing respirator fit testing, audiometric testing, and hearing device fitting for employees.
  • Develops training modules as needed.
  • Works within regulatory guidelines such as OSHA, HIPAA, and EPA.

Requirements

  • Current RN license eligible to work in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum 1-2 years experience in the nursing field.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of data privacy and security practices, particularly HIPAA compliance.
  • Familiarity with electronic data capture applications, including survey and database creation, data entry, and data export.
  • Strong work ethic, initiative, and ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Preferred certification in Occupational Health Nursing (COHN).
  • BSN degree.
  • Experience in occupational health, public health, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in REDCap, including survey and database creation, data entry, and data export.
  • Familiarity with statistical software and experience in exporting and preparing data for analysis.
