About the position

The Occupational Safety Specialist at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining health and safety programs to ensure a safe environment for all campus community members. This role involves providing expert guidance on safety regulations, conducting risk assessments, and promoting a culture of safety across the institutions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain institutions-wide occupational safety programs, including equipment use training for all departments.
  • Prepare and maintain written safety policies and safety manuals for compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Oversee and coordinate hazardous waste storage, disposal, and reporting, ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Test or arrange for testing of potentially hazardous situations, including air quality monitoring and environmental hazards.
  • Collaborate with HR to investigate accidents and incidents, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions.
  • Act as the primary safety trainer, developing curriculum and coordinating training sessions.
  • Track attendance and ensure compliance for safety training sessions.
  • Coordinate and perform Fit Testing for applicable staff.
  • Serve as a liaison to emergency response teams regarding occupational safety and hazardous material incidents.
  • Prepare, maintain, and update safety records and compliance reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering or related discipline.
  • 1 - 2 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local safety regulations.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct safety training and presentations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and safety management software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification preferred.
