About the position

The Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) position at the Veterans Health Administration in Jacksonville, FL, involves providing specialized occupational therapy treatments to veterans and patients in accordance with established guidelines. The role focuses on assessing patient needs, developing treatment plans, and ensuring effective communication with patients and their families to promote compliance and recovery. The OTA will work with a variety of diagnoses, including Parkinson's, stroke, and joint replacements, in a full-time capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and interprets therapy requests and instructions for occupational therapy procedures.
  • Completes a preliminary review of patient data and develops a patient profile for assessment.
  • Secures the confidence and cooperation of veterans during treatment and explains therapy procedures.
  • Assists with or independently renders specialized occupational therapy treatments based on patient needs.
  • Monitors and records the veteran's condition during treatment and takes appropriate actions when deviations are recognized.
  • Records the veteran's response to treatment and ensures documentation is part of the permanent medical record.
  • Prepares and maintains appropriate equipment and supplies for treatments.
  • Adapts and adjusts occupational therapy procedures as needed and assists in developing comprehensive treatment plans.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Successful completion of an associate degree in occupational therapy from an accredited institution.
  • Certification from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
  • A full, current, and unrestricted state license to practice occupational therapy.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.

  • Experience in a healthcare setting, particularly with veterans or similar populations.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based occupational therapy practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a healthcare team.
