About the position

The Ocean Marine Cargo department at CNA Insurance is expanding, and we are looking for a dedicated Underwriter to join our team. In this role, you will be trained on the intricacies of commercial insurance, specifically within the Ocean Marine Cargo specialty line. Your success will be recognized and rewarded as you engage in a variety of underwriting tasks that adhere to departmental guidelines. You will perform underwriting analysis and documentation to assess the acceptability of risks for both renewal and new business, all while operating within your assigned Letter of Underwriting Authority. This position requires you to handle endorsement requests, triage renewal applications, and work as a liaison across various departments to resolve issues related to billing, collections, and risk control. As an Underwriter, you will be responsible for documenting assigned files to ensure completeness and compliance, executing advanced pricing strategies, and completing quote proposals while negotiating with external partners. You will also serve as the first point of contact for producers and customers, identifying opportunities for upselling and account rounding. Your expertise in systems and workflows will be invaluable as you train and coach others, providing feedback to internal underwriting partners. Staying current on industry trends, regulations, and state/territory issues will be essential to your success in this role. Additional duties may be assigned as needed, and you will report directly to a Supervisor or Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Perform underwriting analysis and documentation to determine acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards for renewal and new business.
  • Handle endorsement requests within delegated authority and refer endorsements outside of authority to the underwriter with recommended action.
  • Manage assigned renewal book within assigned authority, triaging renewal applications and formulating next steps for the underwriter.
  • Act as a liaison within the branch or across CNA to resolve issues related to billing, collections, risk control, and underwriting guidance.
  • Document assigned files ensuring completeness, compliance, and quality of correspondence, proposals, endorsements, and cancellations.
  • Execute on advanced pricing strategy on behalf of the Underwriter in compliance with regulatory and CNA specific underwriting strategies.
  • Complete quote proposals and negotiate with external partners within assigned authority.
  • Serve as the first-line point of contact to producers/customers on account-related matters, proactively identifying opportunities for upsell or account rounding.
  • Assist in marketing products and services through external partners and make field visits.
  • Serve as a resource to others, providing training, problem-solving, and coaching.
  • Stay current on line of business strategy, state/territory issues, regulations, and trends.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Property and Casualty underwriting including insurance products, policy processing procedures, and documentation.
  • Strong time management and analytical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on multiple tasks.
  • Strong capability to advise and coach others.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience and the ability to interact with a wide variety of people in person, via telephone, and email.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Typically a minimum of three years of related work experience.
