About the position

The ODOT Master Mechanic position is responsible for performing major overhauls and repairs on gasoline and diesel engines, as well as leading complex equipment repairs within the Ohio Department of Transportation. This role includes providing on-the-job training to lower-level mechanics, diagnosing and troubleshooting electronic systems, and maintaining service records. The position requires a strong technical background in automotive repair and a commitment to safety and efficiency in transportation services.

Responsibilities

  • Perform major overhauls of gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Lead repairs on complex agency-identified equipment problems.
  • Provide on-the-job training to lower-level ODOT mechanics and trainees.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electronic systems and perform repairs using diagnostic equipment.
  • Repair, rebuild, and replace vehicle parts and perform preventive maintenance.
  • Schedule maintenance and repairs of equipment and maintain service records.
  • Attend training schools and update shop manuals and parts books.
  • Operate welding equipment and perform miscellaneous mechanic work.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on mechanic-related software.

Requirements

  • 48 months of experience in repair and maintenance of vehicles or agency-identified equipment.
  • Valid commercial driver's license required for regulated motor equipment.
  • Or 24 months experience as an ODOT Mechanic with a valid commercial driver's license.
  • Or equivalent qualifications noted above, except for mandated licensure.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with hydraulic system control units used in highway salt applications.
  • Familiarity with mechanic training programs and content delivery.
