About the position

The Accounting Manager will serve as a key member of the accounting team and provide strategic decisions to senior management regarding the continuous improvement of strategy, business performance, and profitability. This role is crucial in overseeing the daily operations of the accounting department, which includes managing the Accountants, Accounts Payable, and Receivable departments. The primary focus will be on maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). In this position, the Accounting Manager will actively participate in the day-to-day management of the Accounting Department, engaging with business and operating leaders on an ongoing basis. Developing an in-depth knowledge of PB Material's operations is essential to identify key financial data that can help address emerging challenges and opportunities. The role requires a strong work ethic, the ability to take direction, and the capability to work both in a team setting and independently. The Accounting Manager will be responsible for preparing timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports in accordance with GAAP. This includes supervising the accounting department, obtaining an understanding of all functions within the department, and cross-training staff as necessary. The role also involves assisting the CFO, VP of Finance, and Financial Analyst with annual budgets and rolling forecasts, reporting on budget versus actual performance, and performing variance analysis. Additionally, the Accounting Manager will oversee credit card, balance sheet, and bank account reconciliations, manage fixed asset accounting, and ensure accurate accounting of debt, including capital leases. Collaboration with the VP of Finance and external auditors is critical to ensure proper accounting of acquisitions and to assist with annual external audits. Building strong communication with plant and district managers regarding their financial reporting is also a key responsibility. The Accounting Manager must earn the respect of peers, subordinates, and superiors through integrity, ethics, and a strong moral compass, while maintaining the integrity of financial information by establishing appropriate systems and controls.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of the accounting department, including Accountants, Accounts Payable, and Receivable departments.
  • Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports in accordance with GAAP.
  • Supervise the accounting department and cross-train staff as necessary.
  • Assist CFO, VP of Finance, and Financial Analyst with annual budget and rolling forecasts, report on budget vs actual, and perform variance analysis.
  • Perform and/or oversee credit card, balance sheet, and bank account reconciliations.
  • Manage all fixed asset accounting including cost analysis for purchase, inventory, and valuation and depreciation schedules.
  • Perform intercompany eliminations for multi-entity activity.
  • Ensure accurate accounting of debt, including capital leases.
  • Work with VP of Finance and external auditors to ensure proper accounting of acquisitions.
  • Assist VP of Finance with accurate cash flow forecasting.
  • Understand how transactions are processed through the system and accounted for in the general ledger.
  • Work with external auditors and implement changes related to GAAP updates.
  • Assist VP of Finance with annual external audit and liaise with outside professionals including CPA firm, banks, and insurance agents.
  • Build working relationships with plant and district managers to enhance financial reporting communication.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance is required.
  • Minimum of five to seven years in senior accounting/finance roles (e.g., accounting manager, assistant controller).
  • Strong understanding of financial drivers of the business and US GAAP accounting.
  • Experience managing external auditors and communicating financial performance to district managers.
  • Experience with annual budget and long-range financial planning processes.
  • Experience managing organizations with external debt facilities including bank financing.
  • Experience leading and developing a financial ERP system is a strong plus.
  • M&A experience or experience integrating financial systems as part of an acquisition is a plus.
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal.
  • Exceptional problem-solving capabilities and intellectual curiosity.
  • Ability to balance short-term objectives with longer-term strategic goals.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • CPA or CMA designation is a strong plus.
  • Valid driver's license with no major violations.
