About the position

UN Environment Programme (Mitigation Branch) implements the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) and Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP), an ambitious reporting initiative to facilitate methane emissions reductions from the oil and gas sector. The OGMP is a multi-stakeholder partnership working to improve methane emissions reporting. The updated reporting framework (OGMP 2.0) launched in November 2020, is the most ambitious and comprehensive reporting framework for methane emissions from the oil and gas sector. Member companies report on methane emissions levels from all material sources across the entire oil and gas value chain, including both operated and non-operated assets. OGMP 2.0 is a comprehensive measurement-based methane reporting framework that standardizes rigorous and transparent emissions accounting practices. OGMP reported data will be integrated by the International Methane Emissions Observatory with other data streams (remote sensing data, scientific measurements data, national inventories and related datasets on oil and gas infrastructure). A consultant passionate about data will support the analysis, assessment and integration of methane data reported by OGMP 2.0 companies into the IMEO annual report.

Responsibilities

  • Support the analysis, assessment and integration of methane data reported by OGMP 2.0 companies into the IMEO annual report.
  • Transform raw data into insights into the oil and gas sector.
  • Familiarize with the types of data input into the database and analysis to ensure accuracy.
  • Understand and improve quality control measures.
  • Support the development and documentation of data analysis protocols.
  • Assist the senior data analyst with developing analyses and trends for the IMEO annual report.

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in mathematics, economics, statistics, science or engineering.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with five years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Three years research experience in oil and gas data analysis or emissions quantification and reporting preferred.
  • Experience aggregating and analyzing large data sets to identify trends and generate insights.
  • Experience building, using and deploying dashboards with self-service reporting tools (PowerBI).
  • Understanding of ETL processes to extract, transform, and load data from various sources into a data warehouse or analytical database.
  • Knowledge of techniques and best practices for ensuring data quality throughout the ETL process, including error handling and validation.
  • Strong proficiency in programming languages commonly used in data analysis, such as Python and/or R.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary, multicultural team.
