About the position

Swarthmore College is seeking part-time On-Call Public Safety Officers to ensure the safety and well-being of students, campus property, community members, and visitors. The Public Safety Department is dedicated to providing a secure learning, living, and working environment, emphasizing personal responsibility and accountability. The On-Call Public Safety Officer will be the first responder to incidents on campus, handling both routine and emergency calls. This role requires clear communication skills for reporting incidents and conducting investigations, as well as the ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment. The officer will patrol the campus on foot, by motor vehicle, or bicycle to deter criminal activity, detect safety hazards, and assist students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Responsibilities include responding promptly to reported incidents, enforcing campus traffic safety, and managing emergency situations such as fire alarms and medical emergencies. Officers will document incidents accurately and conduct thorough investigations, including interviews and reports on criminal acts and accidents. Additionally, they will provide escorts for students and employees, manage crowd control at events, and ensure the efficient operation of the Swarthmore College Communication Center. The position requires a commitment to ongoing training in areas such as CPR, First Aid, and mental health support, with successful candidates receiving specialized communication training. The role is essential to maintaining a safe campus environment and requires availability to work on-call at any time during the week, including during inclement weather or emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol the campus on foot, by motor vehicle, or bicycle to deter criminal and traffic violations.
  • Detect safety hazards and facilitate the safe movement of traffic.
  • Respond promptly to reported incidents and calls for service, taking appropriate action based on the situation.
  • Enforce campus traffic safety and parking violations consistently.
  • Respond immediately to building fire alarms and intrusion alarms.
  • Investigate fire and medical emergencies, requesting fire/EMS support as needed.
  • Document complete and accurate reports concerning incidents and calls for service.
  • Conduct interviews and investigations to ensure thorough reports of criminal acts and accidents.
  • Provide escorts and protection for students, employees, and dignitaries as assigned.
  • Manage crowd control at public events and direct traffic during large gatherings.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent with a minimum of three years of experience in security, public safety, law enforcement, or communications, preferably in a college environment.
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to operate motorized vehicles.
  • Excellent oral, written, and verbal communication skills to convey clear information to management and the public.
